Fresnadillo circles 'Highlander' reboot

Summit Entertainment is at discussions with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to direct its reboot of ''Highlander.'' Move comes couple of years after Summit had set Justin Lin to direct and Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis to produce its reboot of ''Highlander,'' striving at turning the fantasy actioner in to a franchise. Lin ankled several several days ago to direct the sixth installment in the ''Fast and Furious'' franchise. Summit acquired the ''Highlander'' remake rights in 2008 from Davis-Panzer Prods. and designated ''Iron Man'' scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway to pen the script. Summit hasn't cast stars or set a start date for production, but it's clearly wanting that it could attract the ''Highlander'' fanbase, developed within the last 20 years. The first 1986 film was directed by Russell Mulcahy and starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart. It launched four sequels and three TV spinoffs. Fresnadillo reaches the Toronto Film Festival for Monday's premiere of ''The Criminals,'' a drama starring Clive Owen and Daniel Bruhl. Fresnadillo has furthermore directed ''Intacto'' and ''28 Days Later.'' Contact Dork McNary at dork.mcnary@variety.com
