Analyst: Selling Hulu Would Be a Mistake of Epic Proportions for Entertainment Giants

NEW YORK - BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield said Tuesday that selling Hulu would be "a mistake of epic proportions" for content giants. In a blog post entitled "Why Hulu Should Not be Sold: Build Long-Term Value versus Maximizing Near-Term Profits," the always-outspoken Greenfield said "we find it very hard to fathom why any media company would want to give up ownership of such a unique asset at such an early stage of growth." Why create a powerful third party with access to the best content like Netflix, he asked. Greenfield in his argument particularly pointed to three trends in the TV industry: "too many ads on TV, TV on your own time (time shifting/place shifting) and the rising impact of social media on what consumers and their friends watch." Given those trends, "Hulu appears to be the perfect weapon for networks/content creators to embrace so they can grow revenues and profits, even if the current multichannel ecosystem becomes unglued over the next decade," Greenfield concluded. Initial bids for Hulu, owned by Walt Disney, News Corp., NBCUniversal and private equity firm Providence Equity Partners, are due on Wednesday, with online, technology and other companies expected to submit offers. News Corp. has recently signaled though that it may decided to retain its stake in the venture, which is led by CEO Jason Kilar. Greenfield acknowledged that running joint ventures is hard. But he compared Hulu to online music venture Vevo, which has aggregated advertising for music labels for videos that air on YouTube. "Nobody expects the labels to sell Vevo anytime soon - the labels are receiving attractive ad dollars for Vevo ads and have an equity stake in the venture," the analyst said. "Hulu is a similar concept." Greenfield's advice: "Media companies should be going out of their way to retain ownership of Hulu and allow it to flourish. The bigger Hulu gets, the more dollars it can pay content creators on an annual basis. While that may be true if it is owned by a third-party as well, being invested in Hulu and sacrificing near-term profits for long-term value creation appears far too compelling." New Avengers Footage Shown

Disney shows off its superheroesAt this year's Comic-Con, one big movie was notable by its absence from all but the exhibition floor and some mentions by director Joss Whedon during a separate panel: The Avengers. This weekend at the company's D23 Expo, the Mouse House made good with some brand new footage and an appearance by several of the cast. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige introduced a fresh look at the film that spliced together some of the footage from the teaser that has been running at the end of Captain America with a couple of minutes' worth of scenes. The new material opened with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) confined in a flashy cage designed, as he observes, for someone else. Samuel L Jackson's Nick Fury explains that it's for "someone stronger" and their exchange is monitored by various other members of the team, including Chris Evans' Captain America and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner. Another notable new chunk was Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark running down the list of heroes while talking to Loki about the forces arrayed against him. "I have an army," snarls Loki. "We have a Hulk," snaps Stark. And... Scene. When the lights came back up, Feige invited the likes of Hiddleston, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Downey Jr up on stage, with only Downey Jr getting much of a chance to speak, largely to crack a joke about visiting the parents in Anaheim and getting the crowd to roar its approval by asking if they wanted to see the footage again. Sadly, Whedon and other members of the cast were a little busy causing mayhem elsewhere in the States as the movie wrapped up its shooting schedule. But from the looks of the footage, we're in for a snappy, fun ride. Favourite moment from what was screened? Jackson's Fury waving off Loki's claims to "real power" from inside his prison with a tart "Let me know if 'Real Power' wants a magazine or something.... "

The problem is that the new releases Spy Kids 4D, Conan The Barbarian, and Fright Night are all bunched together in the $11M to $16M range with holdover Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes . MORE

Alembic enables animation graphics files to maneuver between software programs easily and rapidly, that was difficult with previous file formats. "Most of what people arrived at ILM to Imageworks to complete is very complicated. You need to use every off-the-shelf tool and internal software to drag the work off. Which means this helps possess the common language between all of the different programs," Bredow stated. Version 1. may be the first official production-examined version of Alembic, already being used at Imageworks on "Males in Black III" and "The Astonishing Spider-Guy."
